Bernice Walker, 98, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Monday evening, February 11, 2013 at William Newton Hospital.

Born February 7, 1915 in Cheney, Kansas she was the daughter of Fred and Bertha (Warren) Blakey. She was raised and received her education in Cheney, graduating from Cheney High School in 1933. She later received her teaching certificate from Emporia State University. She returned to Cheney and taught in rural schools.

Bernice was united in marriage to Frank G. Walker on July 18, 1939 in Marion, Kansas. The couple made their home on a farm near Udall, Kansas, where Bernice enjoyed volunteering at the local library. She proudly served as a member of the building committee for the Udall Methodist Church after the tornado in 1955.

In 1963 the family moved north of Winfield where they established the family farm. In addition to helping on the farm Bernice began working at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center as an administrator in the dietary department. She remained there for over 25 years until retiring in 1986. After retiring she volunteered as a teacher for adult literacy classes. Mr. Walker preceded her in death on September 23, 1976.

She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Winfield. Bernice enjoyed quilting, gardening, traveling, reading and sewing.

Her family includes:
Her daughters: Carroll Shivers and husband Ray of Winfield, KS; Kathy Barner of Brandon, FL; and
Her 14 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, Bernice was preceded in death by her son Cliff Walker and her brother Hugh Blakey.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, February 16, 2013 at Grace United Methodist Church in Winfield. Miles Funeral Services is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established in Bernice's name for the Frank and Bernice Walker Scholarship fund through Southwestern College. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
