BARRY L. HOLMES, 80, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Friday afternoon, February 28, 2014 at Via Christi St Francis Hospital in Wichita.

Born May 27, 1933 in Sumner County, he was the son of Albert V. and Edith Eilene (Effner) Holmes. He was raised in rural Udall and attended country grade schools. He graduated from Udall High School in 1951.

Barry married Jodi Mckeever in 1949. To this union, five children were born. The couple later divorced. He was united in marriage to Lou Dale on June 17, 1998 in Udall. She preceded him in death on September 11, 2007.

Mr. Holmes worked many years in the aircraft industry, including at Beech and several years at Cessna as a sheet metal worker. He retired at the age of 62 in 1995. He also worked for over 20 years as an appliance repairman. He could fix anything.

Barry enjoyed traveling and dancing and playing cards. He and his fiance, Pat, participated in many of the local senior citizens activities, including being a board member of the Winfield Friendship Meals and part of the Nutrition Center Council of Winfield. He was an avid model airplane flier. He had his pilots license and owned his own Cessna 150 at one time. He especially loved his family and spending time with them.

His sons: Steven Holmes of Dallas, TX; and David Holmes and wife, Jennifer of Argyle, TX;
His daughters: Cathy McElroy and husband, Tom of Wichita; and Terri Higdon and husband, Jeff of Winfield;
His brother: Ray Holmes and wife, Sue of Udall;
His sisters: Betty Storey and Allene Kistler and husband, Roy all of Udall;
His 12 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren; and
Numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, Lou, Barry was preceded in death by his son, Michael Holmes in 2011.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, March 6, 2014 at 10:30 A.M. at the First Presbyterian Church in Winfield. Interment will be held at 1:00 P.M. at Ninnescah Cemetery. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service on Wednesday from 5 to 8 P.M. The family will greet visitors from 6 to 8 that evening.

A Memorial has been established in Barry's name for Friendship Meals in Winfield. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
