Barbara Shumaker, 50, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Sunday afternoon, August 4, 2024 at William Newton Hospital.

Born May 16, 1974 in Long Beach, California, she was the daughter of Gloria Duarte. As a young child she was adopted by Merle Fred and Mildred Lois (Pierson) Knizley. She was raised and received her education in Clarinda, Iowa, graduating from Clarinda High School.

On August 14, 1993, she married Dennis White in Great Bend, Kansas, where the couple made their home. While in Great Bend, Barb started her career in the medical field working as a CNA at the hospital. To this union three children were born. In August of 1999 the family moved to Winfield, and the couple later divorced.

She was united in marriage to Keith Shumaker on July 20, 2006 in Springfield, Missouri. The couple moved around to stay close to family. They lived in Springfield, Missouri; Springdale, Arkansas; Joplin, Missouri; Clarinda, Iowa; and Winfield, Kansas. Barb lived a life dedicated to caring for others, working not only in hospitals, and care homes, but also volunteering, particularly after the Joplin tornado. She loved her cats, and enjoyed shopping, especially at Target. More than anything, she loved taking care of her grandkids.

Her family includes her husband Keith Shumaker; her children, Britt Patton, Skylar Sunnenberg, and Ty White; her biological mother Gloria Duarte; her siblings, Silvia Mejia, George Duarte, Ana Duarte, Victor Duarte, and Eric Knizley; and her grandchildren, Ada Sunnenberg, Zeriah Patton, and Vedder Patton.

Barb was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, August 17, 2024 at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield.

A memorial has been established in Barb's name for the Essential Tremors Foundation.  Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
