Obituary

Barbara Ann Podschun (Hungerford), 85, passed away on Friday, May 13, 2022. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, friend, cousin, and aunt, and will be dearly missed.

Barbara was born in Stuart, Nebraska, on July 3, 1936. Her parents were William and Lola (Knapp) Hungerford, and she was one of six children. Barbara earned a degree in Nutritional Studies at the University of Nebraska after high school. In 1957, she married Melvin Podschun, from Anthony, KS. They had three sons, Bill, Jim, and Gary, and raised them in Augusta, KS. Melvin passed away tragically in 1976.

For 20 years, Barb was Director of Food Service for the Augusta School District. She was then House Mom at Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity at Kansas State University for 17 years. During her summers, for 23 years, Barb was Kitchen Director at Cheley Colorado Camps in Estes Park, CO. Over the course of her career, she fed over 10,000 children.

She loved hiking in the mountains, watching all kinds of sports, crafting, volunteering, and traveling. She visited all 50 states, all but one Major League baseball stadium, and many national parks.

Barbara is survived by her three sons. Son Bill Podschun and wife Karen of Winfield, KS, and their children: Iris and Anderson of Herbster, WI; Kaely and Delonte Harrod (Jabari, Liam, and Emrys) of Washington, DC; David and Briahnna (Dru and Roman) of Los Angeles, CA; Hannah of Wichita, KS; Jon and Rachel (Rory and Theo) of Brooklyn, NY; Tessa and Chad Olney (Nora) of St. Louis, MO; Laura of Dallas, TX; and Sam of Winfield, KS. Son Jim Podschun and wife Laura of Longwood, FL, and children: Daniel of Orlando, FL; Matthew of Colorado Springs, CO; and Sierra and James Holcombe of Ormond Beach, FL. Son Gary Podschun of San Diego, CA. She also leaves nine wonderful great grandchildren. Barb is also survived by her sister Marjorie Leverenz, her brother Bruce and his wife Veta, and many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews of hers and Melvin's.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin, and her three brothers, James, Richard, and Lynn Hungerford.

Barbara Podschun has been active in the United Methodist Church her whole life, attending churches in Bassett, NE; Augusta, KS; Manhattan, KS; and finally at First United Methodist Church, Winfield, KS.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorials are being established in her name to provide Camperships for students to attend camp. Contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church in Winfield, KS, or Camp Horizon in Arkansas City, KS.
