Obituary

Barbara L. Payne, 90, of Winfield, Kansas, went with her Angels to Heaven on Friday morning, January 13, 2017 at her home.

Born April 3, 1926 in Winfield, Kansas, she was the daughter of Clarence Lee and Barbara Rose (Landgraf) Barnett. She was raised on the family farm in the Frog Hollow area. She attended Frog Hollow school until her 7th grade year, when she could get to town to complete her education, graduating from Winfield High School in 1944. She attended Southwestern College for several years as well as working in bookkeeping for three years at the State Bank.

Barbara was united in marriage to Norman D. Payne on April 18, 1948 at the First Baptist church in Winfield. The couple moved to the Kansas City area so Norman could complete his Watch Making School he was attending. When Norman graduated, they moved back to Winfield, where Barbara became a homemaker for several years, working during tax time at Edward B. Stevenson. In 1957, the family moved to Arkansas City, where Barbara worked part time for a water softener company as a bookkeeper. In 1963, they moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado and Barbara worked for another water softener company for a year as a bookkeeper. From 1965 to 1973, Barbara was the Office/Business Manager for AA Construction Company where she managed all the construction jobs as well as being manager over all the apartment complexes owned by AA Construction. She and Norman moved back to Winfield in 1973 to take care of their parents. Barbara began working for Snyder Research Foundation as Office Manager/Bookkeeper and remained there until her retirement.

Barbara was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church, no matter where she lived. She was always active in all the churches, holding positions on multiple boards. She was a member of Peleg Gordon DAR, the Cowley County Historical Society and the Genealogy Club for the county. She enjoyed spending time with her family. She and Norman traveled extensively as they researched their family history. They made multiple trips to the Mormon Library in Salt Lake City and then went to Europe, England, Ireland and Scotland in search of more genealogy information. They belonged to several square dance clubs and at one point, they danced five nights a week. Another love was camping in the mountains in search of ghost towns.
