Barbara Jane Leffew, 79, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away early Wednesday morning, September 9, 2026, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
Born September 28, 1946, in Winfield, she was the daughter of Ralph and Pauline D. (Cochran) Cales. She was raised and received her education in Winfield, graduating from Winfield High School in 1964. While she was young, she worked for a short time at Woolworth. While skating with friends, she was asked to couples’ skate by Clayton Leffew. That skate started a relationship that would last a lifetime.
She was united in marriage to Clayton on July 2, 1965, in Winfield. The couple lived for a short time in Chanute and El Dorado before returning to Winfield where they would raise their family. Barbara worked at Cessna before becoming a cashier at Wheeler’s IGA. She later ran a daycare and as her grandchildren were born, she took great pride in caring for them.
She was a member of First Church of the Nazarene in Winfield. She enjoyed tole painting, jigsaw puzzles, crocheting, sewing, reading, and playing with her dogs. More than anything, she enjoyed time with family.
She is survived by her husband Clayton of Winfield; her children, Kelli Blanton and husband, Troy of Winfield; Rex Leffew and wife, Amy of Derby; Maci DeCoudres and husband, Trent of Winfield; her siblings, Glenda Shelton and husband, Larry of Winfield; Warren Cales and wife, Dianne of Winfield; Sharon Flower and husband, Clif of Winfield; LeRoy Cales, Jr. and wife, Tracy of Tavares, FL; her brother-in-law Gale Atherton of Concordia; her sister-in-law Jimalene Cales of Winfield; her grandchildren, Tate Blanton (Hannah), Rylee Jones (Nick), Hallee Burns (Hayden), Tori Leffew (Luke), Kinzi Sleep (Trey), Leah Frye (Kadyn), Wyatt Leffew, Gracie Leffew; her great grandchildren, Hadlee Sleep, Clae Jones, Clayton Sleep, Chase Jones, Brooks Blanton, Daxton Sleep; and her numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by a brother Jerald Cales and a sister Suzy Atherton.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, September 14, 2026, at Highland Cemetery under the direction of Miles Funeral Service. A visitation will be held at First Church of the Nazarene on Monday from 1 to 2 PM. The family will greet visitors during this time.
A memorial has been established in Barbara’s name for First Church of the Nazarene. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
