Obituary

Arleen Hilda Ohm Otte , age 91 of Winfield, passed away on Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at Winfield Rest Haven where she lived and was lovingly cared for the last three years of her life. Arleen was born on March 22, 1929 in Winfield, the daughter of Conrad and Hilda (Mueller) Ohm. She was a life-long Winfield resident and dearly loved her home town.

Arleen married Theodore "Ted" Carl Otte II, on September 23, 1951. They supported each other as loving partners through 34 years of marriage until Ted's passing in 1986. Together they raised four children. In 1967 Ted and Arleen built a home of Ted's design at Sharon Acres, just west of Winfield overlooking the Walnut River. Arleen returned to her first employer, First National Bank and served as a teller, happily greeting patrons until her retirement in 1991. She then spent many years as a volunteer at William Newton Memorial Hospital and was a member of the Veteran's Administration Women's Auxiliary. She donated more than 26 gallons of blood to the American Red Cross.

Arleen was many things in her extraordinary life: an enthusiastic member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she was baptized, confirmed and married. She belonged to Trinity's Walther League youth group and was a student at Trinity Lutheran Grade School. As an adult, Arleen was active in Trinity's Lutheran Women's Missionary League, Mary-Martha Guild and Ladies Aid Society.

A proud Viking and Eagle, she attended Winfield High School and St. John's College, later serving as alumni secretary for her WHS and SJC classes. In her spare time, Arleen was a stock-car queen, crowned at the Cowley County Fair Grounds race track in 1950, a city league bowling champion and a member of the Winfield Soroptimist Club.

Arleen adored vegetable (rhubarb and tomatoes) and flower (Peonies and Four o' Clocks) gardening, weenie roasts, barbecues and homemade ice cream, bird feeding and watching (except for Grackles, which she loathed), travel and falling snow. She enjoyed canning tomatoes, relish, pickles, red currant and sand plum jellies, and baking a wide variety of Christmas cookies, German Christmas Kringle, homemade bread, and pot roast with potatoes and carrots after church and Sunday school.

Above all, Arleen reveled in her immediate and extended family, conversation (strangers were just friends she hadn't spoken to yet, and she loved to speak!), celebrating holidays, sewing, quilting, crafting, and the Oklahoma Sooners football team. During 50 years as a fan, Arleen rarely missed a home game in Norman. She donated annually to the Pride of Oklahoma Marching Band.

Arleen is survived by her children, Theodore Carl Otte III and wife Brenda (Wray) of Grand Junction, CO; John Phillip Otte and wife Kathleen (Cole) of Plymouth, NH; Timothy Martin Otte of Plymouth, NH and former wife Lucy (Herlocker Freeman) of Winfield; and Sandra Marie Otte of Norman, OK; six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; brother Rolland Ohm and wife Sheryle of Winfield; sister Bernita Brewer and husband Dick of Pleasant Hill, CA and 34 Ohm & Otte nieces and nephews.

Arleen was preceded in death by her husband Ted, brother Conrad Ohm Jr, parents Conrad and Hilda Ohm, aunts Lydia and Clara Mueller and many other beloved family members. Her survivors are comforted by the knowledge that she is celebrating a grand reunion with all of them.

Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the family will hold a memorial service for Arleen at Trinity Lutheran Church sometime next year when it is safe to travel and gather.

Information regarding charitable donations to be made in Arleen's name is available from Miles Funeral Service of Winfield, which has been entrusted with all arrangements.
