ANDY BALL JR., 88, of Winfield passed away Oct. 22, 2014 at his home surrounded by his family. Andy was born May 10, 1926 in Pickett Hill, Arkansas to Andy Pinkney Ball Sr. and Nannie Harrison (Douglass) Ball. He was one of nine children and grew up on a farm near Rudy, Ark.
He interrupted his education to volunteer for the United States Navy at age 17 and served until the end of WWII in the Pacific Theater. He later returned to Alma High School in Alma, Ark., where he graduated in 1947.
After the war, Andy owned a grocery store and married Shirley Ruth Ward. They were for married for 25 years until her death. One son, Dennis Lee Ball was born to this union. They relocated to Kansas in 1953, so Andy could take a job with Boeing Aircraft Company and they settled in Rock, Kan.
In 1974, he married Jill (Pickering) Ball and they were married for 40 years until his death. In addition to raising three children; Andrew P. Ball III, Jacquie Ball and Andrea Jill Ball, Andy took early retirement from Boeing after 37 years. Then, he and Jill had several entrepreneurial pursuits; including owning antique stores, a restaurant, horse racing, farming and renovating many houses. He also enjoyed several hobbies. Andy was a lifelong gardener, hunter and fisherman. He never tired of reminiscing about his favorite coonhounds, Spike and Sail.
In addition to his parents, Andy was preceded in death by his three sisters and five brothers. Survivors include his wife, four children, their spouses, five grandchildren, two great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be private and in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made through the funeral home to Gentiva Hospice Foundation or the Cowley County Humane Society.
