Alta M.
Gordon
May 11, 1930 – March 22, 2019
Alta Marie Totman Gordon, 88, was born in Arcadia, Kansas, as a coal miner's daughter on May 11, 1930. She departed this life on March 22, 2019, at Cumbernauld Village in Winfield, Kansas.
She was the daughter of Benjamin and Marie (Devore) Totman. She received her education in Mulberry, Latham, and Leon. She moved to Atlanta, Kansas, with her dad in 1951, and worked as a waitress at the Atlanta Cafe making 50 cents an hour. There she met Dale A. Gordon, whom she married on June 9, 1952. To this union was born two children, Randy Dale Gordon and Gloria Gordon Ulbrich. Alta worked on the farm, helped with harvest, and sold eggs to the community. She loved to garden, was a great cook, grew flowers, and played and sang country music. Elvis Presley, Roy Rogers, and Gene Autry were three of her favorites. She enjoyed her grandchildren visiting on the farm and showing them farm life. The family farm has been in the Gordon family for over 100 years.
In 2001 she moved to Winfield and later to Cumbernauld Village in 2016. Alta was baptized in the Baptist Church as a child and attended Atlanta Christian Church. Alta was a member of the K & O Steam and Gas Engine Association and the Walnut Valley Old Time Fiddlers. She attended all of the Walnut Valley Festivals, from their beginning until her health would no longer allow it.
Alta loved people. Her friendly personality and warm smile made it easy to love her in return.
In addition to her parents and husband, Alta was preceded in death by her sisters Louise Mailen in 2004, Nellie Evenson and Orphia Mae Stalnaker in 2015. She is survived by her children, Randy Gordon and wife, Cindi of Atlanta; Gloria Ulbrich and husband, Rick of Winfield; her grandchildren, Kristy Gordon and wife, Karly of Colton, CA; Mark Gordon and wife, Brandi of Winfield; Crystal Ulbrich and Brett Kochenower of Wichita; her great grandchildren Jasmine, Levi and Katie Gordon; Sylvia Kochenower; three nieces and many other family members.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 27, 2019 at 10:00 A.M. at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will follow at the Atlanta Cemetery in Atlanta, Kansas. A visitation is scheduled for Tuesday evening from 4 to 8 P.M. The family will greet visitors from 5 to 7 that evening.
