Obituary

ALLEN JAY HEIN, 82, fought a courageous battle against liver cancer and entered eternal life on Friday, January 6, 2012.
He was born on March 10, 1929 to Jake and Anna (Blackim) in Hillsboro, Kansas. He was the first born to parents who immigrated from Ireland and Germany thru Russia. Allen spent his childhood days in Marion, Kansas and was a member of Marion Presbyterian Church. He was a track star at Marion High School, senior class president, and married high school sweetheart, Jean Muse on August 27, 1950 in Marion. He was a wonderful husband and they celebrated life through 61 years of marriage.

Allen served in the Army during the Korean War. After military duty he worked for Santa Fe Railroad in Newton, Kansas before moving to Winfield and purchasing the Western Auto Associate Store dealership which was owned and operated with his wife Jean for 32 years. In addition he purchased and maintained rental properties.

He devoted his life to being a loyal husband and father, working hard and long hours for his family and his customers. It was commonplace for Allen to help others by extending financial assistance and opening up the store after hours to assists his customers with their needs of car batteries, fixing a flat tire, or car parts. Many college students were employed by Allen and Jean who took a special interest in each of them supporting them as their careers were developed. Lifelong friendships with past employees continue today.

Allen was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church and served as a trustee, 55 year member of American Legion, past member of Jaycees and the Winfield Chamber of Commerce, Elk's Club, Vice President of Flirts and Skirts Square Dance Club, Rebel Camping Club, and a past member City of Winfield Planning Commission. Allen believed in supporting the City of Winfield and community activities with time, financial and material donations.

His hobbies included boating and camping. He spent countless weekends driving a boat and teaching many to water ski. Allen enjoyed traveling overseas with his wife experiencing many countries and favorite spots by winning sales incentive trips through Western Auto and General Electric. After retirement Allen and Jean traveled extensively in their motorhome and enjoyed being snow birds throughout the winter months in Texas and spent summer months at Lake Superior. Many cherished friendships formed with people across the country through their motor home travels which took them through all 48 states and every province in Canada except Saskatchewan.

His family includes:

His children: Barbara and husband Eric King of Lawrence, KS; Mary Jo and husband Steve Rohr of Wichita, KS; Doug and wife Dale of Mulvane, KS;
His 7 grandchildren: Zak King and wife Kerri, Jennifer Ruffley and husband Matt, Matt Rohr and wife Kate, Melanie Rohr, Chris Hein and wife Heidi, Nathan Hein and David Hein;
His 7 great-grandchildren: Logan, Jackson and Jefferson King, Chase and Caden Ruffley, Luke Rohr and Jacob Hein;
His step-mother: Sylvia Muse;
His sister-in-law: Sue Hein;
His brother-in-law: Charles Muse and wife Anne; and
Numerous loved nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Hein.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at First United Methodist Church in Winfield. Military committal honors will follow at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M., Tuesday, January 10, 2012. The family will greet friends from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M., that evening.
